My child needs glasses. What’s next?

You’ve booked an appointment, gone through the eye test and found out that your kid needs glasses (this is where you start to panic).

As parents, we know what size clothing our little ones are in, and we know to always leave a 1-finger gap at the front when buying new shoes; but what do we know about kids glasses?

Coming to terms that we need glasses can be a challenging transition, but it can be even harder for our children. What makes it harder is, as with many things parenting - there isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ solution. In fact, in todays digital age, some companies try to sell the idea that ‘an easy solution’ is equally as good as the traditional way. In reality though, we can’t just to buy a pair of glasses online and pray that they fit properly.

When it comes to kids and glasses, you need to step back and let our experienced dispensers come to the rescue. The same way you would take your child to the dentist to get braces, equipping yourself with a good optician is an essential part of the equation. Our dispensers can help you and your child make the best possible decision, everything from getting the right prescription, lens type, coatings; but mainly the perfect fit.

So, to all our mums and dads out there, here’s what you need to know;

Let’s talk frames. In our digital world, there are so many frames available with differing qualities (including those available on the internet which may seem as simple as an easy ‘click’). But like we said, there is nothing ‘easy’ about getting frames that fit children perfectly. That’s why you need to make time and book an appointment with our experienced optical dispensers. This way, you can try on as many sizes, styles and colours to find a pair that your child loves (and our dispensers can make sure they fit!) This means no more slipping down the nose, ensuring that they are suitable for your child’s prescriptions, and making sure that they’re not too wide or too small.

What about lenses? Even with one simple prescription, there are so many different ways your lenses can be made up; changes in heights, PDs, coatings, quality and designs. Changes in these can greatly impact how the lenses will benefit your child. This is why it is so important to sit down with our dispensers and ask them everything (we really mean everything!). Whether it be, where are the lenses made, do I need the blue coating, what is the difference between digital and grind, or even what does ’single vision mean’? Optical dispensers around the country can guide you on their recommendations, take any measurements required and help answer and questions and alleviate any concerns you may have.

Great glasses don't happen by chance, they’re a timeless formula of patience, time and experience. Give your child the best chance and invest in their future by getting them that perfect pair. Now you can stop panicking and book an appointment at your local optometrist!
